School and God

The very first establishment of learning must have been orgnised to preach the glory of God in the form of religion. The churches in the west and temples in the east served as centres of learning. Philosophy was the subject around which sciences, and mathematics were taught and learnt. Scholars were saints and godmen.
Today the irony is, both in Communist China and democratic USA, God is forbidden from school. A perfect example of union in two extreme positions. Slowly, over decades, both countries will move towards the other and swap positions, causing the earth to be an eternal bipolar planet.

US is one of the conservative nations in the world. Doubt if that would happen. One can never say it wont but that day is many eons away for sure.

Isn't the concept of / the label religion a more recent phenomenon? And school sponsored prayers / preaching of any particular religion is what is not allowed. Individual practice is allowed. Faith / Belief or lack thereof can’t really be regulated at least in free thinking societies

Deepa,
Maybe. But it doesn't generally take that long to forget the original reason of implementing a rule/law.
Anon,
Firstly, thanks but mc wd have saved u time, i thought. I think the schools shd be allowed to teach God albeit Christianity or whatever denomination it is affiliated to. In India we had prayers in the school that I went to. Probably it was the same case in Santhome. I know it is true w.r.t Holy Angels.IMHO, teaching the existence of God (whatever form) to kids is mandatory failing which will lead to the path of atheism.

What's wrong with atheism?

Nothing wrong with atheism, if it is preached in the Mahavir way.

Hopefully it teaches one to believe in oneself. No one can help someone who does not have faith in himself. Not even god, if at all he exists.
